Bloomsbury Festival Music Stage

11am-7pm, Saturday
Brunswick Square
(opposite the Renoir cinema/Brunswick Centre)

Hanne Hukkelberg

On Stage at 18.00

Hanne Hukkeleberg

“ Warm whispers seem to dance in the air and the meaning of music is revealed… subtle and moving.” – Observer Music Monthly

“ Hanne Hukkelberg’s voice is so ethereal it makes Björk seem clumsy.” – Q Magazine

“ At once staggeringly original and brimming with unusual charm, Hukkelberg enchants at every turn… A fascinating musical creature emerging from the shadows of obscurity.” – Rock Sound

Over the course of her two albums, Little Things (Leaf) and this year’s Rykestrasse 68 (Nettwerk), Norway’s Hanne Hukkelberg has established herself as one of the most distinctive and original singer-songwriters around. With a voice that is “equal parts Stina Nordenstam and Nina Simone” (Uncut), she’s created a musical world that is “Gloriously leftfield and strangely intimate.” (DJ Magazine). Hanne will be appearing with her full band and, we hear, playing her bicycle.

Elysian Quartet with Alexis Taylor and Joe Goddard (Hot Chip)

On Stage at 16.30

Elysian Quartet with Alexis Taylor and Joe Goddard (Hot Chip)

'‘...outstanding coolness and flexibility... quicksilver tonal variety... sharp musical and technical?reflexes.’ - The Strad

‘ Feisty boundary pushers, four supremely talented classical musicians’ - Metro

The Elysian Quartet is one of the UK’s most innovative young ensembles and the only British string quartet of its generation focused exclusively on 20th Century, contemporary and experimental music. It was formed in 1999 by prize-winning students at Trinity College of Music and has since performed all over the world to great acclaim.

The Elysians have worked with artists as diverse as virtuoso beat-boxer Killa Kela, jazz pianist Keith Tippett, and experimental electronic composer Simon Fisher-Turner.

Foy Vance
On Stage at 13.00

Foy Vance

‘An unbelievable voice...in the premier league of British songwriters' - The Sunday Times

'The missing link between Richie Havens and Stevie Wonder' - The Independent

Foy Vance operates in his own parallel universe. His music is an evolving journey, a constant search for artistic expression captured in the moment, operating well away from industry standards. Surely you’ll hear echoes of Otis Redding, Richie Havens, Tom Waits and Van Morrison in Foy’s music, legends he’s already being compared to and definite influences. An ever so modest Foy will laugh at these comparisons, but then again that’s what makes him so special.

Paloma Faith

On Stage at 12.00

Paloma Faith
Paloma and her super-sharp band channel sixties soul, classic jazz and blues into dark songs of love, loss, hurt and regret. Influenced as much by the imagery of David Lynch, Wong Kar Wai and Matthew Barney as the classic wax of Peggy Lee, Billie Holliday and Etta James, Paloma weaves elements of performance art and left-field fashion into a captivating live show.

Olivia Chaney&Matthew Ord with Kadialy Kouyate

Knights in glimmering armour, damsels in distress, incest, love and mischief.

Classically trained folk-singer Olivia Chaney and folk-blues guitar virtuoso Matthew Ord interweave beautifully pared-down vocal harmonies, harmonium and harp-like guitars through their heart-felt renditions of traditional and modern songs. For this special collaboration, they will be blending all this with the griot traditions of Senegalese kora player Kadialy Kouyate.
